Chiang Mai - Sa wad dee jao!- Popularly known as the Rose of the North, Chiang
Mai is blessed with stunning natural beauty and unique indigenous cultural
identity. Founded by King Mengrai the Great as the capital of the Lanna
Thai kingdom by merging the various city-states in the region in 1296. Today
Chiang Mai is the economic, communications, cultural and tourism centre
of Northern Thailand. About 700 kilometres from Bangkok(13 hrs. by train
and 9.5 hrs.(painfully) by bus), Chiang Mai is situated on the Mae Ping
River basin some 310 metres above sea level.
Chaing Mai History:Nagas -
A mythological powerful creature that protect Buddha. Naga means 'serpent'
in Sanskrit, and its first documented appearance is in the Hindu cosmological
myths. It also appears in Buddhist legend, reminding us how closely these
two great religions were linked. Always, the naga had a quatic associations,
and there was even a race of part-serpent, part-human nagas who inhabited
the watery underworld. The most important legendary nagas had names. Ananta,
also knwon as Sesha, supported the god Vishnu on a bed of its couls as the
two floated on the cosmic ocean and the god dreamed the universe into existence.
In another myth, the naga Vasuki lent its body to be wrapped around Mount
Mandara so that the gods and demons, grasping its head and tail, pulled
it back and forth, rotating the mountain and so churning up the ocean from
which it rose to release magically the elixir of life. At Muchalinda, the
naga protected the meditation Buddha from a strom by rearing its large cobra-like
hood overhead like an umbrella.
Chaing Mai Music or
Lanna Music :
Before the turn of the 20th century, the Lanna kingdom of northern Thailand
enjoyed considerable political power and prestige. One indicator was the
development of a rich body of music that is particular to northern Thailand,
and often played on instruments only found in the north. Since the mid-1970s,
there has been a resurgence of interest in the cultural legacy of Lanna,
and many universities now sponsor traditional music and dance programs.
The instruments like "salaw (free bow fiddle), saw (single-reed pipe)
and seung (plucked lute)" echo the Lanna music the world most beatiful
song. The song here is playing by local elder groups who love their treasures
and anever want to leave it behind.
